Instruments
The deep lively tone of the cello, the radiant singing voice of the violin, the fine grain of the wood, the perfect curves of the viola. every instrument is unique and possesses its own particular character, its own sound. My purpose is to mold this sound, to develop it and thereby to make each instrument not only an acoustic but also an aesthetic pleasure.
The path from tonewood to string instrument
My work begins with the selection of the wood. I use exclusively the finest selected tonewoods, those that have been stored for 10 years and more.
All instruments are intricately handcrafted, up to the smallest detail. The protective varnish is applied with a brush after construction of the instrument is complete. It brings new life to the wood and influences the the instrument's color and tone quality. I make this highly flexible varnish myself according to traditional formulations and using carefully selected resins. Thinly applied with a brush, this varnish confers its unique beauty to the instrument.
Breaking-in and optimizing the instrument
Before the instruments leave the workshop, they are tested and optimized regarding their sound and playing qualities in close cooperation with professional musicians and our customers.
The key to success
In parallel with the construction of string instruments according to my own design, I have specialized in the reproduction of instruments of the old masters. Here, the highest level of expertise with respect to materials, craftsmanship, experience, and a passion for the work are combined with an everlasting quest for perfection-without the need for secret formulations or special tricks, as the violinmaking literature would lead one to believe.
Whether a Stradivarius violin or a Montagnana cello, my goal is to capture and convey the beauty and sound of these instruments.
The many prizes and awards I have received in national and international competitions testify to my success in achieving this goal.
Repairs and adjustment
Perhaps you want to have a damaged instrument repaired. I will ensure that it soon regains its former quality. Or maybe you simply want to optimize the sound of your instrument. I will take the same care that I do with my own instruments.
